What are Digital Platform Conductors, and Why Should You Care?

An orchestra is made up of many instruments and musicians who play them. While each musician can create music with their single instrument, only when all musicians play together under the direction of a conductor, can the orchestra perform a symphony.

Modern enterprises work similarly. There are many functional groups that work mostly in silos, using a variety of digital infrastructure tools, but need to work together with other departments to produce business value. The challenge for the modern enterprise IT leaders is that these digital tools do not necessarily integrate and interact with one another to help business leaders with strategic workflows and decision making, nor do they enable and automate key business processes across multiple teams. To overcome this, IT organizations use humans as orchestrators, who in turn rely on error-prone manual tasks, spreadsheets and service tickets to deliver business outcomes.

The modern enterprise was missing the digital equivalent of a symphony conductor. Until now.

Digital Platform Conductor (DPC) Tools - A New Market Category

Gartner recently released its first Gartner® Market Guide for Digital Platform Conductor Tools*. They describe DPC tools as those that coordinate the various infrastructure tools used in an enterprise to plan, implement, operate and monitor underpinning technology and services for applications and digital products.

Oomnitza is honored to be recognized as a Representative Vendor in the inaugural Gartner Market Guide for Digital Platform Conductor Tools.

There is a huge need for DPC tools. And it's easy to understand why. IT organizations operate in a much more complex environment than just a few years ago. First up are the migrations from managing on-premises infrastructure and applications to the cloud. While this has been going on for at least 10 years, a new level of complexity has been added to the modern enterprise with multi-cloud and hybrid cloud technology models. And this has been exacerbated by remote, hybrid, and work from anywhere business practices. While cloud services and SaaS applications are easier to deploy individually, managing them across multiple business units, tech stacks, and remote workforces has become increasingly more challenging.

As IT infrastructure becomes more complex, it becomes more difficult to coordinate and automate business processes, manage end-to-end digital infrastructure lifecycles, and optimize technology utilization and IT spend. And that is the precise reason for this new market category of DPC tools.

The importance of DPC tools is illustrated with a prediction from Gartner: “By 2026, 75% of DPC tool adopters will be consistently successful at demonstrating I&O business value, versus 25% of nonadopters.*” This creates a sense of urgency for CIOs and other infrastructure and operations business leaders to begin incorporating DPC tools in their tech stack.

What are the Characteristics and Capabilities of Digital Platform Conductor Tools?

Conceptually, a DPC tool operates like a symphony conductor. But what do they specifically do? Here are some of the DPC capabilities as outlined by Gartner:

  • Service Enablement and Workflow Automation - Enable a single point of entry and automation for all digital infrastructure requests and route them to the appropriate digital platform via an integration. Examples are employee onboarding and offboarding.
  • Technology Inventory and Classification - Leverage existing tools to provide an overarching view of all hardware, software, cloud and virtual digital assets, including managing their lifecycle.
  • Cost Management and Resource Optimization - Ensure resources are at optimal levels of capacity, and help direct, validate and justify spending for digital assets. Examples are rightsizing software renewals and refresh forecasting accuracy.
  • Identity, Security and Compliance - Ensure audit readiness and compliance of digital platforms to security baselines in order to mitigate risk and enhance security posture.
  • Packaging and Delivery - Ensure scalability, modularity, compatibility, ease of use and ability to work with other digital tools to meet enterprise requirements.

Oomnitza and Digital Platform Conductors

Long before Gartner defined Digital Platform Conductors, Oomnitza led the market by creating an enterprise solution to coordinate and manage infrastructure tools, and automate key business processes for IT. We call this solution category “Enterprise Technology Management,” or “ETM.”

ETM unifies technology intelligence and process automation across the entire IT estate by leveraging existing tools and simplifying broad workflow adoption so that IT organizations can reduce tickets, eliminate error-prone manual tasks and optimize resources. Essentially, an ETM solution is a Digital Platform Conductor.

Oomnitza’s Enterprise Technology Management solution delivers business process automation across your IT estate including endpoints, applications, infrastructure and cloud. Our SaaS solution, featuring agentless integrations, best practices and low-code workflows, leverages your existing systems and enables you to optimize resources, expedite audits, mitigate cyber risk and eliminate redundant spend.

Oomnitza coordinates and manages digital infrastructure tools through our extensive and growing library of integrations with enterprise applications, including cloud management, customer relationship management, IT Service Management, unified endpoint management, endpoint security, and many more.
